The staircase ahead leads to a library floor. Before the Disappearance, these areas were strictly off limits to students. It's said that the creaking bookcases above can rearrange themselves, and that menacing things stroll through the stacks. Only one Edgewood student ever requested library books from her teachers. Apparently these requests were honored, doubtless due to unfortunate and outdated contractual requirements in the school's charter.
